Dilworth NC Real Estate – Dilworth History
Dilworth was founded by Edward Dilworth Latta, a Princeton grad from Pendleton, SC. Latt moved to Charlotte in 1876 to open up a men’s men’s clothing store. He later founded the “Four C’s,” the Charlotte Consolidated Construction Co., and purchased 250 acres of land just southeast of uptown Charlotte, which later became Dilworth. Latta hired the Edison Electric Company to construct the electric trolley system from uptown to Dilworth, replacing the horse-drawn carriages of the day. That’s why Dilworth is known as “Charlotte’s first street car suburb!”
The first stop in the trolley system was Latta Park, which became the hub of activity of Dilworth. Residents and visitors enjoyed professional baseball games, and football games for the University of North Carolina and Davidson College, and parties and picnics by the lake and lily pond. Latta also brought in the famous Olmsted Brothers (architects), who designed the beautiful winding Dilworth Roads, East and West, lined with beautiful, mature oak trees. Through years of development, Dilworth grew and thrived. The Atherton Cotton Mill began in 1893, owned by D. A. Tompkins, the founder of our local newspaper, The Charlotte Observer. A mill village for cotton mill workers soon sprang up along Euclid Avenue.
